Engine Oil Filtration
IHT recommends two remote oil filters, mounted lower than the engine oil sump (if possible), with pressure gages before and after the filters so differential pressure can be observed.
- Differential Pressure is the metric by which oil filter changes should be scheduled.
- Large Oil Filters minimize Oil Pressure Drop, insuring that all oil passages are receiving proper operating pressure.
- Remote Oil Filters may make changing oil much easier.
- Use only swaged hydraulic hoses rated for the temperatures that the system will experience
- Monitor Oil Temperature with sensor on the remote oil filter mount
- Murphy Oil Switchgages are wired into the alarm system for the pressure sensor on the downstream side of the filters.
- One of the Oil Filters should have a drain back valve
- One of the Oil Filters should be a 5 micron Oil Filter
- A heat exchanger can be utilized plumbed into the Oil Filter system for better engine cooling.
- A pump can be utilized to circulate oil before starting the engine so the engine does not have a dry start. This is particularly important for engines that have sit for long periods of time.
The IHT Oil Filtration Setup protects the engine for longer engine life.
Properly mounted remote oil filters are easier to access and change than engine mounted oil filters.
The drain plug can be replaced with a hose and tap, and run to an oil pump for convenient and easy oil changes.
Larger Oil Filters from large diesel trucks do not have to be changed each time oil is changed (though it is recommended). However sometimes it is not practical and changing the oil in the sump alone will suffice to refresh the additive package until a full oil and filter change can be accommodated.
All engine oil has additive packages to protect the oil from the adverse conditions inside the engine.
Engine Oil changes should be made regularly and on a time schedule consistent with the engine manufacturers recommendations.
Pictures provided below are the Oil Filtration and Cooling setup installed on the company Ford Expedition. This setup extended oil change intervals from 2500 miles to 5,000 miles by utilizing a 5 micron large format filter.
We prefer to use Baldwin Filters.
